The Trades Union Congress (TUC) yesterday presented assorted food items and bags of sachet water to the affected victims of the Akosombo Dam water spillage in their various camps at Adidome in Central Tongu and Mafe at Mepe in the North Tongu districts in the Volta Region.
In all, four safe haven camps received donations in the Central Tongu district, while a donation was presented to the Mankrado of Mepe to also distribute amongst his people at Mafe safe haven.
Camps from Central Tongu that benefited were the women and children, who were taking shelter at the Adidome Farms Institute, Evangelical Presbyterian Church premises at Afetorgbokofo, New Dakpa Zorotodzi, and Launch Tekor.
Presenting the items, Mr. Joshua Ansah, the Deputy National Secretary of the TUC, said the organization was the umbrella body of many workers from across the country and represented a huge chunk of the labor force.
He said as a result, any mishap in the country affected the labour force, which ultimately impacted TUC.
Mr. Ansah said that with the disaster from the spillage, the TUC found it necessary to commiserate with the affected communities and donate something to them.
He said the visit marks the beginning of a thriving relationship until issues return to normalcy for the people to enjoy their normal life. Leaders of the various camps thanked the leadership of the TUC for their kind gesture.
In a related development, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in collaboration with Volta Star Radio (VSR) and Ghana Post had also presented relief items to the flood victims at Mepe and Battor -Agbetikpo.
The items include bottled water, sachet water, food items, sanitary pads, toiletries, and clothing, among others.
The items were jointly presented by the Coordinator of Ghana Television (GTV) Cares, Mr Samuel Kotei Nikoi, and the Acting Volta Regional Director of GBC and VSR, Mr John Gadawusu.
Mr Nikoi said the items were donations from viewers and listeners, who responded to appeals on behalf of the flood victims.
Receiving the items, the Queen Mother of Mepe Traditional Area, Mamaga Sreku IV, thanked GBC, the people of the Volta and Ghanaians in general for the support and assured that the items would be used for the intended purpose.
Mamaga Sreku pleaded with the government to fulfill promises made to resettle the victims, numbering 1,255 people, including men, women, and children.
The Manklalo of Mepe Traditional Area, Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to show much commitment to support the victims because many of them were going through emotional and psychological trauma.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, appealed to corporate groups and philanthropists to come to the aid of the victims who were still in need of essential items and asked VRA to resettle the victims who were still in the classrooms.
