STATEMENT ON INCREASES IN ELECTRICITY AND WATER TARIFFS

TUC Calls for Immediate Suspension of Electricity and Water Tariff Increases

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana has condemned the recent increases in electricity and water tariffs announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and has called on the government to suspend the decision immediately.

At an emergency meeting on Monday, December 8, 2025, the TUC Steering Committee expressed outrage over the approved tariff hikes of 9.8 per cent for electricity and 15.9 per cent for water, calling the move insensitive to the economic realities facing workers.

The TUC pointed out that the consultative process leading up to the tariff announcement was incomplete. The Congress said that although discussions had begun with the PURC, the engagement was not concluded before the Commission announced the increases, a development the TUC described as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of social partnership.

Following its deliberations, the TUC demanded that the government suspend the tariff increases and urgently reconvene consultations with all stakeholders to exhaust the review process.

The TUC also raised concerns about the impact of the tariff hikes on workers, noting that the increases are expected to take effect on January 1, 2026, while the agreed 9 per cent wage adjustment for workers will only be paid at the end of January.

The Organisation says it will resist any tariff increases that undermine workers’ conditions of living, unless the government returns to the negotiating table to improve the 2026 wage adjustment.

The statement was signed by Joshua Ansah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (Ghana).
